Tour F - Friday Night Lights
Our special tour for true "Night Owls"
Fridays, 6:00 pm - midnight
Experience "the city that never sleeps" at its best—on a Friday night! This tour begins with a ride through
the historic East Village and Lower East Side, traditionally the immigrant enclave of New York - now one of the "hottest"
spots for nightlife.
While we uncover the gritty remnants of the Bowery's late night past, we'll also encounter the beginning of the
weekend as we pass by some of New York's hippest hangouts in the LES, Nolita, and Soho. Here we'll see how the
Five Point slums and tenements of the 19th century have meshed with modern New York.
We'll climb the immortal Brooklyn Bridge, and take in the breathtaking view of Lower Manhattan,
before plunging back into its heart - first up: the Financial District. Even after the final bell rings on Wall Street,
there will be no shortage of "suits" donning their Friday night threads, staying well past Happy Hour at any
number of swank steakhouses. Hey, they "work hard, and play hard!"
We'll discover how this area has always been the place
for nighttime revelry for New York's rich and powerful with visits to the former sites of the first Dutch saloon of
New Amsterdam and the first British alehouse of New York. We'll also pass by the favored drinking hole of
America's founding fathers and site of George Washington's toast celebrating the end of the Revolutionary War.
Typical of New York's duality, only blocks away we'll view the third oldest building left in Manhattan,
home to one of the city's seediest bars ever, famous for staging rat fights in its basement!
Further west, we'll observe the dazzling lights of the New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty along the
Hudson River. After briefly traveling along one of the city's nicest waterfront bike paths, we'll veer
inland to enjoy two of the city's most sought-after neighborhoods, with a rich late-night history of their
own, and a modern-day night life to match—Greenwich Village and the Meatpacking District. In the Village
we'll spot the famed bars and cafés of the counter-culture movements of the 20th century while keeping an eye
out for any celebrities arriving in limos to one of the many chic restaurants and clubs of the Meatpacking District.
Before biking into Hell's Kitchen (which has a notable night life of its own!), we'll view
the multitude of lights created by Midtown's many skyscrapers. And then, before you know it, we'll be
among them—right in the middle of Times Square on a Friday Night! Times Square's wonderful
new pedestrian mall
makes this an ideal place to kick back for a moment and take in this homage to modernity.
The tour will conclude as we ride straight down Broadway on one of the City's newest separated bike lanes.
As we pass through Times Square, Herald Square (home of Macy's), and Madison Park (which offers the best architectural
views from within Manhattan!) you'll understand why the ride down Broadway is often said to be the favorite
among New York cyclists.
This tour leaves Fridays, weather permitting,
at 6 pm, a few blocks from Union Square, of Manhattan.
It is approximately 15 miles, will last about 6 hours, and costs $90. The cost includes the bike, a helmet,
a reflective vest, front and back bike lights, as required by law, and a licensed tour guide ($10 less
with your own bike).
