Tour G - Deep in the Heart of Brooklyn
From Prospect Park to Coney - and Everything In Between
Select Thursdays, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Ask one hundred New Yorkers where to find the heart of Brooklyn and
you’ll likely receive one hundred different answers! But, no matter
what the answer, you can bet that it’s not on the tourist map. This
ride will explore the many geographical and cultural "hearts" of
Brooklyn while taking you all the way to the famed Coney Island!
After weaving through the extensive meadows of Prospect Park, Olmstead’s (of Central Park fame)
favored creation, the park gives way to a mosaic of cultures that go
beyond imagination. You’ll travel from the West Indies, to Mexico, from
Pakistan to the Middle East, from Halal to Kosher, and end up at the
appropriately dubbed "Odessa by the Sea." And, it wouldn’t be a true
"Heart of Brooklyn" tour without visits to the neighborhoods the true
Brooklyn Italians call home.
From quintessential Brooklyn apartment houses to manicured lawns, you'll
know when you are getting closer to Coney Island as you realize you're
hearing Russian upon your entry to Brighton Beach. Now, the smell of the
surf and the splash of the waves pounding the jetties beside this
conglomeration of part amusement park, part neighborhood show you that
Brooklyn defies one word definitions. A trip this far out would not be
complete without a trip to see the largest suspension bridge in North
America-- spectacular views abound as you ride past the Verrazano Bridge
and out the mouth of the New York Harbor!
Just as Brooklyn has produced plenty of famous characters whose pictures
have appeared throughout the world, it has also produced some infamous
characters from the underworld whose pictures have ended up on the walls
of post offices. (We’ll find out about one or two of them as well).
By the end of the tour you’ll see why just saying the word “Brooklyn,”
evokes a smile out of anyone who's ever been there. Don’t be surprised
if you walk away shouting fuggedaboutit, even though this is an
experience you will surely never forget!
This tour leaves select Thursdays, weather permitting, at 10:00 am, a block away from Prospect Park in Brooklyn. It
is approximately 20 miles and will last about 7 hours.
The $90 cost includes the bike, a helmet, and the licensed tour guide (food and drink extra; $10 less with your own bike).
